Lapgate, the Anglo Tapes and continued austerity measures had the beating of light entertainment beheamoths and reality TV in this year’s Twitter top 10 chart of trending topics in Ireland.
Late night panel show Tonight with Vincent Browne proved the most popular topic of discussion with #vinb the most used hash tag in the country. Second place went to the longest running chat show in the world, the Late Late Show. Reality TV staples X Factor, The Great Irish Bake Off, The Apprentice, The Voice of Ireland, and Big Brother took third, fourth, fifth, seventh and tenth spots respectively.
Sport featured only once this year with Match of the Day taking eight position, one ahead of the evergreen Eurovision Song Contest. Prime Time, the only other current affairs programme on the list, took sixth position.
In other categories Brian O’Driscoll and Roy Keane were the two most talked about in the sports people and Irish people categories. The GAA topped the poll of sports, ahead of WWE’s Raw. In the Irish News caterogy Roma was the most popular topic, followed by the seanad referendum and the 2014 budget. Surprisingly Lapgate was one spot above the Anglo Tapes in sixth and seventh places. Syria, David Frost and HMV were the top three entries in the international news.
Lastly, the Irish Conversation Starters category yielded some fun answers, including #secondaryschoolmemories, #irishblockbuster and #thingsirishpeoplesay.
