Plone for Web Content Management

As more and more communication and collaboration between customers, partners and peers moves to the web, authoring for and managing web sites is becoming a major headache for organisations. Content Management and Document Management systems are stepping up to the challenge.  Plone is considered by many to be the leading Open Source Software (OSS) offering in this space, and it is starting to gain a following in Ireland. As with many OSS projects,  deployments are not always advertised since they are completed by in-house personnel or small support organisations.

Plone is an out-of-the-box ready content management system that is built on the powerful and free Zope Application server. It requires minimal effort to set up, is deeply flexible, and provides you with a
system for managing web content that is ideal for project groups, communities and intranets. It includes a workflow engine, role based security model, built in WYSIWYG authoring, skins editor for look and layout, and pre-built ‘products’ for content such as Newsletters, Bulletin Boards, Issue Collectors, News, Events. Plone also supports  integration with other systems such as directories, relational
database systems, and email.

Recent sites to go live in Plone include Oxfam America (http://www.oxfamamerica.org), The Strategic Rail Authority (http://www.sra.gov.uk), the City of Berne and NASA’s Mars Rover Website. Ireland’s Public Services Broker (PSB) technical documentation site  (http://sdec.reach.ie/) and Beaumont Hospital’s Intranet and Document Management System are local examples.

Other technologies that fit in this space are the PHP based  PostNuke, Apache Lenya (formerly Wyona), Midgard and Moodle which also has an active following in Ireland.
