In theory, file sharing is a very good way to let friends and colleagues access information that would normally be locked up on your computer. However, the popular file-sharing networks are set up for an ‘all-or-nothing’ approach, without much control over who on the internet can gain access to the data on your computer. That’s not to mention the potential legal issues associated with these networks – they’re almost exclusively used to share files illegally and most are watched by the authorities, who target prolific sharers of copyright material.
That’s where Onshare comes in. It’s designed by the people who brought us the popular Onspeed internet accelerator, and it’s designed to make sharing of files and folders easy and, more importantly, secure and safe.
Connections are encrypted, it works behind a firewall, and files are only shared with people to whom you’ve previously given permission. It’s cleverly set up – you can share certain files with certain people, and not with others. There’s also a chat application.
The software works, but it’s a bit quirky, and the interface takes some getting used to. That said, this is still a beta version, meaning it’s still in testing, so this might be ironed out soon. Once that happens, Onshare certainly has the potential to succeed, offering as it does file sharing without the hassle. Potentially useful, but a little unstable as it’s still in testing.
