Mistral seeks investment of €3bn investment to keep up with US competition

Successful round would raise French AI lab's value to €20bn

The French AI lab Mistral is reportedly talking to investors about a capital injection of three billion euros at a valuation of €20 billion.

News agency Bloomberg reported this shortly before the weekend on the basis of anonymous sources.

The money would be on top of the €4 billion previously raised.

The French are building AI models that are similar in function and operation to their American counterparts, but are shaped entirely according to European standards. They focus more on large users, researchers and institutions and less on the individual end user.

Mistral’s alleged valuation of €20 billion stands in stark contrast to that of Anthropic and OpenAI. The maker of Claude raised money earlier this year at a valuation of €380 billion , that of ChatGPT at €852 billion. Both are planning a stock market flotation, but have not yet published a prospectus.
