As an IDC report on the converged infrastructure market has shown Oracle to be the leader in the area with its engineered systems, such as Exadata and Exalytics, the company has released survey information from the Irish market showing not only a high level of awareness of such systems, but also their potential to deliver business value.

A report from Oracle entitled “Engineered Systems: Bridging the Gap between Priorities and Budgets” contains survey information of 100 Irish organisations of 100 employees or greater, and shows that IT transformation is the top priority for nearly one in three (30%) next year, followed by reducing costs of IT maintenance and consolidating hardware and software, and improving access to real-time data.

Oracle argues that its engineered systems help businesses address all these concerns, as well as allowing companies to easily consolidate hardware and software. These solutions, it maintains, greatly reduce IT complexity, reducing maintenance times and costs and enabling IT managers to focus on transforming their IT to drive innovation.

Engineered systems comes under the heading of converged infrastructure, where multiple components are brought together in optimised packages of hardware and software pre-certified by the vendor, such as server, storage and network functions, or database and analytics and the like.

The report said that survey respondents were optimistic about IT budgets, with more than a third (38%) indicating that IT budgets would rise. Among larger organisations, in the 500 to 999 employee range, this rose to nearly half (47%). Across the board, less than one in 10 expected budgets to be reduced.

The potential for converged infrastructure or engineered systems to help with the priorities of the respondents was expressed by a strong 43% who are currently considering or planning to implement converged, or engineered, systems in the near future.

This momentum for implementation is informed by the vast majority of respondents (91%) indicating that they understand the role that engineered systems have in promoting efficiency across the business, with 69% suggesting the technology is “very important” in promoting efficiency in their organisations.

“With IT budgets expected to increase over the coming year,” said Paul O’Riordan, country leader, Oracle Ireland, “companies in Ireland are finally in a position where they can act on their long-standing IT priorities. As engineered systems reach a level of maturity in the Irish market, and early adopters begin to experience the operational benefits of the technology, it’s only a matter of time before other businesses follow suit.”

“Traditionally IT budgets have been consumed in large part by the need to maintain existing complex multi-vendor systems and keep the lights on, but our research has shown not only an appreciation for the benefits that Engineered Systems will bring, but also an appetite to invest in solutions and technologies and solutions that support ongoing transformation strategies and get fit for the future.”
