Desktop PCs with processor speeds of 3GHz should be widely available by the end of next year, if Intel manages to mass-produce its latest Pentium 4 chips on time
Pentium 4 processors hitting the 3-GHz mark have already been demonstrated at trade fairs and Intel says they will have the speedy chips on the market before 2003.
The arrival of 0.13-micron engineering technology has played a significant role in accelerating the clock speeds of Intel processors.
Intel has intensified its focus on the development and manufacturing of processors for PCs, laptops, handhelds and other computing devices.
Already, Intel has announced that it will stop production of Pentium III chips with 100-MHz system buses that have clock speeds less than 1.1GHz. But plus-1-GHz Pentium IIIs with 133MHz buses are still being produced, as are Mobile Pentium III chips.
