Europe’s biennial meeting on scientific research and innovation, which opens this morning, is a major opportunity to showcase ‘Brand Dublin’, according to Dublin Chamber of Commerce. The Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF) commences at the Convention Centre Dublin today and is the key event in a year-long Dublin City of Science festival. Included in the list of keynote speakers is Prof Rolf-Dieter Heuer, director general of CERN, on the work going on at the Large Hadron Collider, where the world heard a week ago of a discovery of a Higgs Boson-like particle.

Gina Quin, Dublin Chamber chief executive said: "Being the City of Science in 2012 gives Dublin the opportunity to demonstrate its full credentials as a knowledge city. Amongst the 5,000 attendees will be Nobel Laureates, leading researchers, global policy makers, senior business leaders and the international media who are going to experience a city which is a buzz with international talent, cutting edge firms, and a culture fostering science and innovation."

There will be a number of presentations demonstrating the current frontiers of scientific and technological research in Europe, while the forum also aims to bridge the gap between science and society as well as stimulating policies to support scientific research.

As part of Dublin playing host the Euroscience Open Forum, the Science in the City festival is running a series of events to draw in the crowds. Over 60 events are taking place throughout the festival which will run until 15 July.
