Eircom has confirmed plans to deliver fibre broadband to 1.9 million business and domestic premises throughout the country by 2020. This marks an expansion of 300,000 premises to the existing network over the next five years across 1,070 communities, including 300 not currently served with high speed broadband.

The telco has promised connection speeds of up to 1Gb/s through the use of fibre to the home technology at a cost of €400 million.

The homes and businesses to be served by this investment are largely ribbon style developments across rural Ireland in communities such as Fybagh, Co Kerry; Blacksod, Co Mayo; Goleen, Co Cork; Maam Co Galway; and Ring, Co Waterford.

According to eircom, some 1.2 million homes and businesses have access to broadband on the telco’s network and the company remains on track to reach 70% of the country by the end of 2016.

The company estimates that 80% of the country, will have access to a 1Gb/s service when construction is complete.
