Many of the tools mimic the real-life paints and brushes used by artists but there are plenty of extras that take advantage of the digital canvas.
A good place to start experimenting is the brush tool for freehand drawing. Here, with a steady hand, you can simulate some impressive painting styles; oil paints and watercolours are mixed just as in real life.
There are 43 default brushes, ranging from standard types to flower and plant shapes. Colours are chosen from a digital palette or can be created from varying shades. Project Dogwaffle can also be used with graphics tablets and will respond to the pressure of the pen.
The impressive Particles mode is a tool for creating effects such as grass or trees. Branches are automatically created as the mouse moves and the number and direction can all be changed.
Another strength of this program is its ability to create animations. There are some interesting effects that can be applied and adding a background is easy. The action can be added frame by frame or automatically with brush particle effects.
Project Dogwaffle can also be used to edit photos, although it’s not as powerful as dedicated photo-editing programs.

The sheer number of tools in Project Dogwaffle can be a little baffling, and we occasionally had to rely on the tutorial videos included on the CD. These were helpful, but not easy to find. Still, it’s a decent program for any budding artist.
