Console cost drops

It’s enough to make a grown person cry. No sooner have you invested almost €200 in a shiny new games console than those nice people at Sony and Microsoft go and drop the price even further.

The end of August saw the usual round of price cuts in the run-up to Christmas, with both the PlayStation 2 and the Xbox taking a price tumble. Fans of the consoles can now expect to pay €159 for the PlayStation 2, with the Xbox going one better at €149.99.

Irish PS2 fans already own 450,000 of the consoles, but Sony is hoping that the price drop will encourage more gamers to invest in the PS2 — just in time for Christmas. New games titles due to hit the shops in the coming months include GTA San Andreas, Gran Turismo 4, Getaway: Black Monday and Singstar Party.

Microsoft is also planning an assault on the games chart with new titles such as Fable, Forza Motorsports and, of course, Halo 2. EA’s games are also due to make their debut on Xbox Live, with the company aiming to be the strongest games console for Christmas.
