An Android app for Frontline Canvassing has won the UCC ‘Dragon’s Den’ competition organised by the Entrepreneurial and Social Society, in partnership with the Student’s Union and Ignite programme at UCC.

Brendan Finucane, a final year student in Business Information Systems (BIS), walked away with prize money of €3,000 for his app which uses Google maps to check off individual homes that have been canvassed, leafleted and registered to vote in elections.

The application will also pinpoint locations through the use of a check-in button, and will enable colour coding of pins to indicate the status of the home in relation to canvassing. The location pin will be dependent on the reception received on the door which will be measured by star ranking out of five. This functionality will form part of a canvassers report. A secondary tool has been implemented to check the voter registration. There is also SMS functionality built into the app. The main beneficiaries would be political canvassers and candidates that have a mobile Android device.

A second prize of €1,000, sponsored by Bord Gais, was won by Kieran Nestor on his business idea of Studentconnect; a service that aims to connect students currently in academic study with small businesses and start-up organisations for work on college projects.

Other entries included a personal genomics platform for assessing likelihood of genetic diseases; a website for ordering paintings and portraits; a group electricity buying scheme for SMEs; and a student Buy & Sell website among other business ideas.
