Apple expected to reveal three new smart home products almost ready for introduction
Apple is preparing for a bigger move into the smart home market. According to Bloomberg, three new smart home products are almost ready for launch: an updated Apple TV, a new HomePod mini and an entirely new smart home hub with a screen.
The updated Apple TV and HomePod mini could appear as early as this autumn. On the outside, both devices will remain largely unchanged, but internally they will get faster chips designed to support Siri’s new AI features. This should make them better prepared for Apple’s broader push into artificial intelligence.
The most striking newcomer is the smart home hub, which, according to the report, will be announced sometime between October and early next year. Apple is said to be developing two variants: a model with a screen on a semi-circular base and a version that can be mounted on the wall using a magnetic system.
The device will reportedly feature a square 7″ display and run on a new operating system that combines elements of tvOS and watchOS. The interface consists of apps, widgets and icons, and offers support for, among other things, FaceTime, HomeKit, security cameras and customisable clock views.
Facial recognition will be one important feature. The hub should recognise who is standing in front of it and adapt the interface accordingly. In this way, personal information such as calendars, notes and other relevant data can be displayed automatically. The display is also said to adapt to the distance at which someone is standing.
Bloomberg further reports that Apple is working on additional smart home products for a later phase. These include a more advanced hub with a 9″ screen on a robotic arm and a smart home security camera.
