Anthropic in talks with Meta over multi-billion deal for additional AI computing power

Shortage of computing power forces AI competitors to collaborate

According to reports from CNBC and the New York Times, Anthropic is currently holding preliminary talks to obtain around $10 billion (€8.7 billion) worth of computing power from Meta. This potential agreement follows a recent partnership with SpaceX, under which Anthropic committed to paying $1.25 billion (€1 billion) per month for the use of Nvidia GPUs at the Colossus 1 facility.

The talks show how fierce the competition between AI companies is to secure sufficient computing power. That capacity is needed to meet the growing demand for advanced models such as Claude.

Despite a valuation of almost $1 trillion (€874 billion), Anthropic is still struggling with hardware limitations. As a result, the company had to impose restrictions on the use of its services. Other players are running into similar problems; for example, Google pays $920 million (€804 million) per month to SpaceX for access to GPUs and is currently limiting the use of Gemini by Meta due to capacity constraints.

For Meta, this collaboration would mark a strategic shift towards the cloud services market, a move Mark Zuckerberg had already hinted at earlier. The CEO has indicated that other companies are keen to buy computing power from Meta at a premium.

By monetising its vast infrastructure, Meta can better justify its enormous AI investments and recent staff cuts to its shareholders. The company is further strengthening its cloud ambitions by attracting top talent, such as former AWS executive Dave Brown.

Although the deal would create a paradoxical relationship – with Meta providing the core infrastructure for a direct competitor – such collaborations are becoming increasingly common in the AI landscape. The pressing need for computing power has blurred traditional rivalries, as seen with SpaceX serving both Google and Anthropic.

The sector is thus evolving towards a model in which competitors work together to overcome the physical limitations of AI infrastructure.
