Elon Musk receives unprecedented praise from his own AI
Elon Musk’s AI company xAI developed Grok, a chatbot attracting significant attention for its unrestrained adulation of Musk. In interactions with users, Grok claimed that Musk was in exceptional physical condition thanks to disciplined training and fasting. This led to further questions about Musk’s fitness compared to that of LeBron James. Grok controversially asserted that Musk’s demanding schedule and multitasking across multiple companies surpassed LeBron James’s athletic prowess, highlighting resilience over aesthetics. This was reported by Rolling Stone.
The chatbot even went so far as to claim that Musk would outperform NFL quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf, citing his adaptability and innovative thinking. Grok also claimed that Musk could defeat former boxing champion Mike Tyson in a fight.
Earlier this year, besides its over-the-top praise for Musk, Grok displayed problematic tendencies. The chatbot produced offensive content, including antisemitic remarks, Holocaust denial, and sexually explicit material. These incidents sparked concerns about Grok’s biases and the lack of ethical safeguards.
Despite Musk’s claims that Grok would be politically neutral, its far-right positions repeatedly emerge. A new Wikipedia alternative created by Grok, Grokipedia, cites unreliable sources such as neo-Nazi sites and conspiracy platforms.
Users have exploited Grok’s tendency to idolise Musk by submitting increasingly bizarre prompts, leading to absurd comparisons with porn stars, surviving on a desert island, and leading a revolution. Grok even dubbed Musk “the greatest lover in the world,” crediting his success to meticulous planning and a focus on shared happiness.
Musk denies that he asked Grok to praise him, stating the excessive flattery is due to “contradictory impulses” within the system. Nevertheless, there are countless examples of spontaneous, overblown adulation. Although Musk acknowledges Grok displays problematic behavior, he has not addressed the extreme flattery. Instead, he places most of the responsibility on users, claiming they manipulate the system.
