Siemens is to provide satellite navigation technology across the entire Bus Éireann fleet of 700 vehicles, according to the transport company.
The system, representing an investment of €4.2 million, will provide nationwide access to real time information about bus arrival times, as opposed to scheduled arrival times. Information will be delivered via the Web, by text messaging and at bus stations. The provision of real-time information is underpinned by GPS technology.
In addition to being convenient for customers, the system will enable the company to improve operating efficiency and communications, allowing all bus locations to be pinpointed at all times.
Lorenz Zimmermann, Managing Director of Siemens Ireland, said future additions to the fleet will have GPS fitted as standard.
The first phase of the roll-out will start in September on selected Expressway services to and from Dublin.
Nationwide rollout will start in 2007, with satellite tracking technology to be fitted on all Expressway and Commuter coaches across the country and on city buses in Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford.
