Kernel Capital and Dublin Business Innovation Centre (BIC) have announced a €650,000 investment in mobile app developer Zinc Software. The investment comprises of a €150,000 investment by Kernel Capital through the Bank of Ireland MedTech Accelerator Fund, €150,000 by the AIB Seed Capital Fund, co-managed by Dublin BIC, with the remainder of the funds provided by Enterprise Ireland and PCH International. Zinc is the first European company to partner with PCH International, as part of its Accelerator programme.

Zinc develops next generation heart sensors aimed at the health and wellness market. The company’s Zen Sensor is a wireless biosensor that clips onto an ear lobe that transmits high resolution heart waveform data to an iOS or Android device. The Zen sensor system relies on heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback, a clinically proven method of reducing blood pressure and levels of stress hormones in the blood.

Zinc will use the investment to drive its marketing strategy for the US market, and to develop its SDK program to allow licensing partners to integrate Zinc’s heart sensor with their own apps.

Darran Hughes, CEO, Zinc Software, said: "The Zen gamifies meditative breathing and allows anyone to take 10 minutes out of their day to re-energise and refocus. In the near future we will rapidly see the growth in body-oriented sensors and apps which will make healthy living fun and engaging. The Zen is the ideal product to relieve stress which is known to cause and exacerbate many health problems."
