A team of pupils from St. Joseph’s NS Ballyheigue in Co. Kerry have been named overall winners of Trend Micro’s What’s Your Story? video competition for 2024.

Each year, What’s Your Story? asks a thought-provoking question regarding technology and internet use, and invites children and teens from across the country to submit their response in the form of a two-minute video. This year’s topic was ‘How might new technology (or AI) help you in the future?’

The winning team, whose ages ranged from eight to 11, took the top prize of €2,000 for their two-minute video Perception, where a grandparent shares his opinions on AI.

A judging panel consisting of representatives from Webwise, Science Foundation Ireland, Media Literacy Ireland, CyberSafeKids, Press Pass and Oide adjudicated four categories: overall winner, critics’ choice award, group category 8-12 years, and school category 13+.

The critics’ choice award of €1,000 went to Shane King and his family from Co. Westmeath, who used a variety of visual effects in their short – Tomorrow’s News Today: Dreaming of a New World! – to showcase how they individually imagine adopting AI in years to come. This is their third consecutive win.

The winner of the school category 13+ was Cashel Community School’s transition year Multimedia Class, under teacher Joe Flynn. In their video, entitled A + I = ZZzzzz, the students explored how technology can affect human functions, such as the ability to sleep well. A similar idea was addressed in the winning video from the group vategory 8-12 Years – The Techogram 2000 – submitted by Dramarama in Cork.

Commenting on this year’s winners, Avril Ronan, Trend Micro global programme manager for Internet safety for kids & families, said: “As usual, Trend Micro’s annual Irish youth video competition challenged the youth of the nation with an important question, and we were not disappointed! Young people were encouraged to research, chat with friends and family, to ask questions and to let their imagination run wild with their answers, and this is exactly what they did.

“From St Joseph’s energetic, creative and thought-provoking submission, to the King family’s collaborative exploration of the future of AI, our judging panel was both entertained and intrigued by the ideas posed within each winning video.

“We need look no further than online to acknowledge the risks and dangers posed by technologies such as AI, but it also has tremendous benefits for the world when used responsibly. Through their use of media and film, their voices were heard and they provoked thought.”

What’s Your Story? is a highlight of Trend Micro’s Internet safety for kids & families (ISKF) programme; a global educational initiative that provides support to parents and teachers as they try to keep children safe and savvy online.
