TikTok launches new ‘PineDrama’ app for bite-sized drama series

Video sharing platform takes on established services ReelShort and DramaBox

TikTok has released a new app called PineDrama, focused on microdramas: short, serialised fictional stories delivered in one-minute episodes. For the moment, the app is only available in the United States and Canada on iOS and Android.

Users can find content via the ‘Discover’ tab, filter by genre or browse personalised recommendations. The app offers a wide range of genres, from thrillers to romance.

PineDrama also has a ‘Watch history’ section for easy access to ongoing series and a ‘Favourites’ section to save preferred dramas. Viewers can even join the discussion in the comments sections.

This move follows TikTok’s own foray into microdramas with its ‘TikTok Minis’ section. PineDrama now positions TikTok to compete with established microdrama platforms such as ReelShort and DramaBox.

The microdrama industry is still relatively new, but is expected to reach a substantial annual revenue of $26 billion by 2030.
