Twelve teams, whittled down from 550, will go head to head next Thursday, 30 April, to see who will represent Ireland at the global finals of Microsoft’s Imagine Cup in Egypt this summer.
Now in its seventh year, Imagine Cup challenges students around the globe to imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest social and environmental problems. The Competition was open to all third level institutions to compete in categories spanning software design and short film to challenges involving algorithms and programming. Students’ work had to reflect valuable, real-world solutions that address pressing global issues while giving them the opportunity to compete for cash prizes.
The 12 teams competing in the Irish finals next Thursday are from Trinity College Dublin, Griffith College Dublin, IADT Dun Laoghaire, NUI Maynooth, Dundalk IT, IT Carlow, IT Sligo, NUI Galway and Limerick IT. Shortlisted projects tackle problems including the learning needs of young children through building and problem solving; an internal school network which connects to schools worldwide; designing and building a simulator for Eye Surgical Training; development of ‘health text’ which will provide simple medical information to parents and children via mobile phones and a neuro scientifically innovative brain fitness game to enhance intellectual and emotional performance.
Speaking ahead of the finals Paul Rellis, Managing Director, Microsoft Ireland said, “Imagine Cup has taken Ireland by storm – in our first year entering Ireland in the global competition 100 students from Ireland entered the Irish heats and the Irish teams have consistently competed very well at the global finals. Three years on and we have over 550 students entering.
