Facebook and Twitter can help engineers to come out of the shadows and better communicate their vast contribution to virtually every aspect of Ireland’s economy and broader society, according to the new president of Engineers Ireland, PJ Rudden (pictured).

Mr Rudden was giving his inaugural presidential address at the Engineers Ireland AGM yesterday.

Rudden said: “As a profession, we need to be confident and go on Facebook and Twitter to tweet, blog and shout about the huge contribution engineers make to Ireland. Leadership is about making the difficult things happen. If the engineering sector is to lead in the economic life of our country we need to do more than just engineer. Engineers need to influence, to invent, to innovate.

“While we adhere to international and best practice guidelines, our profession – unlike the legal and medical professions – remains unregulated and this is a concern that we hope to address at Government level in the year ahead. We have seen in recent years the effects of ‘soft touch’ or indeed no regulation in banking and business life and want our engineering profession to not only meet the highest international standards but be seen to meet them also. We need new legislation to regulate the engineering profession as quickly as possible.”

Engineers Ireland ihas a membership of over 24,000 professionals incorporating all disciplines across industry, public service, semi-state organisations and academic institutions.
