The Royal Society and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) have signed an agreement to offer a university research fellowship scheme for young scientists in Ireland.

The Royal Society-SFI University Research Fellowship Programme will be funded by SFI with applications be subject to a peer review by the Royal Society.

The scheme covers all areas of the life and physical sciences, including engineering and mathematics, but excluding clinical medicine and direct biomedical research. Successful applicants will receive funding for projects (including a salary) for up to five years.

Prof Sir John Pethica, Vice President of the Royal Society and Professor of Physics at Trinity College Dublin, said: “The initiation of this scheme reflects an awareness of the value of supporting all excellent research and providing young scientists with the room and space to flourish.”

Prof Mark Ferguson, Director General of Science Foundation Ireland and Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government of Ireland, said: “This partnership will enable researchers based in Irish higher education institutions to compete for a prestigious Royal Society-SFI University Research Fellowship which in turn will allow them to develop into Ireland’s research leaders of tomorrow. Interacting with their UK peers during the time of their fellowship, will foster research collaborations between Ireland and the UK both now and in the future.”

The programme is open for applications from 18 July 2014. An information day will take place at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin on 17 July.
