O’Callaghan Hotels has become the latest hotel chain to offer public Internet wireless hotspots in its four hotels in Dublin. Working with 3Com and Computer Technical Services, the hotel now has wi-fi access on all floors and bedrooms in the Alexander Hotel, the Davenport, the Mont Clare and St. Stephen’s Green Hotel.

There are approximately 50 3Com Access Points 8250s installed in this system. The public can connect to the Internet at broadband speeds via any PC, laptop or personal organiser device with a Wi-Fi wireless card purchased from the hotel.
‘The network is both wired and wireless, and Internet access can be gained from any floor or bedroom, not just the hotel lobby, which differentiates us from other hotels and brings our technology even closer to our guests, said Gerry Colreavy, IT manager, O’Callaghan
Hotels. ‘We can also offer guests on-site maintenance so we can deal with any problems quickly and efficiently without having to rely on third party help desks. Our aim is to make Internet access as seamless as possible for the guest as well as exploring other services such as printing and TV access over the guest Local Area Network (LAN).’

An international roll-out of the service is planned to link the Elliott Hotel in Gibraltar, which has 114 rooms and a 120 bedroom hotel in Annapolis, Maryland.According to Jerry Collins, managing director, Computer Technical Services O’Callaghan hotels is managing the entire system itself with the backup and maintenance support of
CTS. ‘They find that their international and Irish guests both prefer the wireless system as charges don’t innocuously appear on your hotel bill. It is paid for with a Wi-Fi card which can be purchased at the hotel reception.’
