Sony will add several new cameras to its range in the coming months. The DSC-U20 is a compact camera with a high image resolution and a sapphire blue aluminium body.

It integrates a 2.0 effective megapixel progressive scan Super HAD CCD, combined with Sony’s advanced digital signal processing, which gives excellent image quality.

The camera also offers Auto Focus and a 10cm Auto Macro, VGA Burst multiple shot sequences, Scene selection and an MPEG movie option. The images can be reviewed on the built-in LCD screen, saved to the Memory Stick and transferred to a PC through the USB interface.

The package includes Image Transfer software, which automatically uploads the images to your PC. Also included is Image Mixer software, which allows you to build your own photo collection on your PC, store them or send them to friends via email.

The DSC-U20 weighs under 90g and fits in a small pocket. In fact, Sony believes the camera is more like a fashion accessory — a stylish and elegant personal accessory.

Sony has also introduced several new models to its three new models to its Cyber-shot ‘P’ range. The DSC-P31 provides 2.0 effective Megapixel and a 3x digital zoom, the DSC-P51 represents a step-up model with 2.0 Megapixels, 2x optical zoom and 6x digital zoom. The DSC-P71 offers even better performance with 3.2 megapixel resolution, 3x optical zoom and 6x digital zoom.

All three models contain a number of new features that make taking and distributing the images simple. Integrated Super HAD CCD technology in Snoy’s new cameras minimises noise and maximises light in every pixel so that images are as clear as possible.

Clear Colour Noise Reduction smoothes out distortion caused by prolonged exposure, allowing for a more natural reproduction of tone, such as in skin, skies and seas, and different textures. To account for light changes, the Clear Luminance NR feature is a filter that smoothes the transitions between the changes resulting in a crisp image with greater contrast. It also improves detail in areas where light levels are flat. Advanced LCD automatically adjusts the gain in low lighting images, so the user can check the framing of the object on the LCD monitor. The gain is automatically reset when shooting the picture. The three cameras also feature two additional white balance modes.

The new cameras also integrate MPEG Movie HQX, which is similar to the MPEG EX facility on previous models. However, the advanced feature enables the user to fill remaining space on the Memory Stick with full motion MPEG movies.  The system captures 16.7 frames per second.

For those who want action shots, Sony has developed Multi Burst, which takes and stores 16 shots in one JPEG file.

The DSC-P7, which replaces the DSC-P5, also has Super HAD CCD, and offers a 3.2 effective Megapixel resolution. The camera integrates the new features such as Clear Luminance NR, Pre-flash, Multi burst, Multi Point AF, Multi pattern metering, Even brightness pictures, MPEG HQX and Auto Bright monitoring.

Multi point AF ensures that even if the subject is not in the centre of the screen, the camera focuses automatically on the subject without using focus lock. Image data is taken from a flash triggered prior to the shot being taken. Multi pattern metering is also useful where the subject is off-centre or where brightness varies.
