More Apple WWDC tickets flood eBay

More than a dozen tickets to Apple’s sold-out Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2011) are now being offered on eBay and Craigslist, with asking prices more than doubling the $1,600 face value.

As Network World first reported Tuesday morning following the sell-out of the show in less than 12 hours, scalpers were quick to offer WWDC 2011 tickets for resale at prices in the $2,000 to $4,500 range.

As of noon on the east coast Wednesday, several dozen bids were made on a number of the ticket offers and Buy Now prices were still holding at no more than $4,500.

Apple does not explicitly forbid resale of WWDC tickets, at least on its FAQ. Last year, tickets also surfaced on auction and online classified sites following the sell-out of the show in eight days.

Apple has specifically said that this year’s event on June 6-10 at the Moscone West convention center will focus on its iOS and Mac OS X software. It’s widely expected that the cloud-enhanced iOS 5 will be introduced at the event, though possibly not offered until fall. Apple earlier this month released iOS 4.3 for the iPhone smartphone and iPad tablet computer.

It is anticipated that the much previewed Mac OS X Lion software will be released during the event. However, it remains unclear whether other typical WWDC happenings – an appearance by CEO Steve Jobs and the introduction of Apple’s next iPhone (possibly the iPhone 5) – will be on tap.

Apple at WWDC 2011 promises to hook up developers of iPad, iPhone and Mac applications with one another and to recognize the best designed and most innovative apps for Apple platforms. Technical tracks at the event include Application Frameworks; Graphics, Media and Games; Developer Tools; Internet and Web; and Core OS.

The WWDC 2011 sellout isn’t unprecedented this year. Google last month said its Google I/O event being held in San Francisco in May sold out in 59 minutes.
