Minister for Education & Skills Ruairí Quinn today launched the 2013/14 F1 in Schools season at the Irish Computer Society (ICS) offices in Dublin.
Organised in Ireland by ICS and supported by Discover Science and Engineering, F1 in Schools is a global competition that challenges students to design, build and race model Formula 1 cars powered by compressed air canisters.
Over the course of the completion students will learn and apply knowledge in a variety of different areas from physics and aerodynamics to marketing and financial strategy.
Launching the event Minister Quinn said: "This programme is a fantastic way for students to put into practise what they have learned in the classroom. It really is a case of learning by doing. The global popularity and high tech world of Formula One provides a very exciting and engaging platform for education and it is great to see how popular it has become within schools to enthuse students to study engineering, as well as the other key school subjects."
Irish Computer Society CEO Jim Friars said: "The competition is not only great fun but it gives students the opportunities to see a broad view of the possibilities offered by technology and engineering, the winning teams of F1 in schools have gone on to compete around the world, and what began in books and on laptops becomes real allowing students to see the practical side of theory."
