Meteor goes for MMS

Pro

1 April 2005

In a special promotion, these new services are being offered free of charge to subscribers until December 31st. Meteor is now offering the latest range of MMS-compatible mobile phones, including camera phones and camera attachments.

Existing customers with MMS handsets will also be able to use the services and the required settings for this are available on ‘My Meteor’ (www.meteor.ie) or by calling Meteor Customer Care free on 1905. Meteor admits that full network interoperability is not yet available, so users will not be able to send picture messages to camera phone users on the Vodafone and 02 networks. As a workaround, any MMS that is sent by a Meteor subscriber to a user on another network will arrive as an SMS with a web link that the recipient can use to view the message on the Web.

This service is charged at 9c, the same price as a standard text message.
Meteor will also offer support for customers who do not have an MMS mobile phone, allowing them to send and receive MMS from the Web. All customers will also be able to use pictures from the Meteor Picture Gallery and downloading and using the pictures will be free until December 31st, 2003. In addition to standard SMS text alerts, Meteor will also offer MMS Alerts. MMS Alerts are similar in concept to the text alerts currently available, but can include photos and graphics as part of the alert as well as more text allowing them to be closer in content to a magazine article than a simple alert. These MMS Alerts will also be available on a free trial basis until December 31st and will include a range of lifestyle alerts including Movie Reviews, TV reviews, celebrity gossip, Tarot and horoscopes.

New MMS news and sport services will be launched in the coming weeks.
Faster data services will be offered through the enhancement of WAP through GPRS and to compliment this, the Meteor WAP site has been updated with new links including an ‘up to the minute’ in-depth news service on the Rugby World Cup. Meteor also allows customers to access their Meteor, Hotmail, AOL or MSN web-based mail accounts through WAP and while this is available to all customers, Meteor’s GPRS customers will be able to read and send e-mails at faster speeds. This service is also free until December 31st. A new range of Java Games, polyphonic ringtones, screen savers, colour wallpapers and logos are also available. To access these services, simply log onto My Meteor on the Web or through WAP on a Meteor phone.
