Building on the success of its annual conference in Cape Town, South Africa, mHealthEd 2013 will be held at the Round Room in the Mansion House, Dublin, on 12-13 September.
The conference, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), will be attended by experts in mobile tech, animators, academics, and government healthcare officials from around the world.
Despite high rates of child hunger and mortality, many developing countries now have up to 80% mobile phone penetration, providing the opportunity for frontline workers to utilize digital media and educational content such as animation and video.
MHealthEd is part of an international bid to save lives in the developing world using animation and mobile devices to deliver educational animated films for use on mobile phones which teach about prevention of cholera, AIDS, malaria, child malnutrition and other preventable health-related dangers. Many of the educational animations are produced in conjunction with studios, independent animators and colleges from around the world.
"Growing evidence indicates that animation and digital content are valuable tools to enhance Frontline Health Worker learning outcomes," said Tom O’Callaghan, CEO of iHeed Institute. "Our content is simple to understand, even for trainees with limited education, rapidly localisable, and easily distributable via network or mobile connection, at a fraction of the cost of paper-based materials.
"However, there is still a lack of training content available, despite high demand, and no best-practice guidelines for implementation."
The aim of this year’s event is to provide a platform on which new guidelines regarding digital content creation for health worker training can be developed. By creating a discussion on the creation of next-gen digital and animated training content, standards for mobile health education can be set.
Current speakers include: Rikin Ghandhi, CEO of Green Digital; Firdaus Kharas, Chairman of Chocolate Moose Media; Daniel Snaddon, Director of Animation South Africa; Dr. Marc D. Mitchell, Lecturer on Global Health at Harvard School of Public Health; and Mark Davey, CEO of the DAM Foundation; Robert Cairnduff, COO of 34D Medical.
The event will be managed by Investnet Healthcare on behalf of the iheed Institute, a Cork-based animation, technology and healthcare initiative.
