Irish teams take three awards at F1 in Schools World Finals

Bardahl Racing and Odyssey have scooped three awards between them at the ninth the Forumla 1 in Schools Competition World Finals held in Austin, Texas last week.

Bardahl Racing from St David’s School Co Wicklow – overall winners at the Irish National finals held in May – won Best Engineered Car. Meanwhile collaboration team Odyssey – a collaborative effort from students from Donabate Community College, Donabate and Brighton Secondary School, Adelaide, Australia – picked up both Best International Collaboration and Best Design Portfolio.

The winners of this year’s World Finals were A1 Racing from Adelaide came first with Odyssey placing sixth overall and Bardahl 10th.

The teams took to their social media outlets to express their joy, with Odyssey quick to congratulate the winners on their Facebook page. “We would like to congratulate Australia’s A1 Racing on being the World Champions” they wrote.”We would like to thank everybody that supported us along the way, including sponsors, parents, teachers, and Cold Fusion [their Australian team members], who were always there to help us when we needed it.”

Bardahl tweeted: “Delighted to win best engineered car award!”

F1 in Schools is a global multi-disciplinary competition for students aged 9-19 where teams race cars made of balsa wood propelled by compressed air. Teams raise funds through sponsorship and invested in administering, developing and expanding the challenge. The competition inspires students to use IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacturing, branding, graphics, sponsorship, marketing, leadership, teamwork, media skills and financial strategy, and apply them in a practical, imaginative and exciting way.
