Irish Media Centre to launch in October

By October, PCs running the Windows XP Media Centre 2005 operating systems will be available in Irish retail stores. They will feature full support for the software’s innovative personal TV recording functions which have been localised to support Irish terrestrial TV channels.

Up to now the full functionality of Microsoft’s Media Centre OS had only been available in three European markets – France, Germany and the UK. Clive Ryan, spokesperson on Windows XP for Microsoft Ireland, told PC Live! that the company has now localised the OS for a further 20 countries and that Ireland had been included in that group.

Furthermore, the operating system with support for full TV scheduling information and recording for RTE, Network 2, TV3 and TG4 is currently being beta tested by a number of end users around the country. “So far the beta testing had been going very well. There are few differences between the Irish and UK versions.

Originally, the TV tuner cards would not auto-tune the Irish channels for the Media Centre’s electronic programming guide. This issue has now been resolved.” The Irish version of the Windows XP Media Centre 2005 operating system will be released to the PC manufacturers and system builders for OEM in August. The Media Centre project represents Microsoft’s attempt to integrate PC technology into the living room for home entertainment.
