Ireland to celebrate Global Wind Day with week of events

Over 1,000 people are expected to visit wind energy sites at various locations across the country this week for Global Wind Day. Organised by The celebration coincides with continued growth in the Irish wind energy sector which experienced a record power output level of 1,323 megawatts of wind energy – enough to power more than 850,000 homes – earlier this year.

Taing place on Thursday 15 June, Global Wind Day is organised by the Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA), the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). Last year on Global Wind Day, 220 events took place in 29 countries around the world including with over 1,000 people visiting wind farms around Ireland.

Michael Walsh, chief executive of IWEA, said: “Because of our outstanding wind resources, Ireland has the opportunity to be an international leader in the wind energy generation and the open days at wind farms around the country to mark Global Wind Day is an excellent opportunity for the public to get a greater understanding of the sector and its enormous potential benefits. Last year over 1,000 people visited wind farms around the country and we would encourage as many people, young and old, as possible to get along to our open days and experience first-hand the wonder of wind energy.”
