Intel has responded to the success of Apple’s new MacBook Neo with its own chip for affordable laptops. It concerns the new Wildcat Lake Core 300 processor, intended for similar thin and light notebooks.

According to early benchmark tests, the chip scores around 21% better than the A18 Pro chip in the MacBook Neo in multi-core performance. At single-core level, both processors are almost on par.

The MacBook Neo attracted a lot of attention thanks to its combination of low price, solid performance and long battery life. The Windows laptop market has so far had no direct answer to that proposition, mainly because there was no suitable competing chip available. Intel is now trying to fill that gap with Wildcat Lake.

Even so, competition is not just about speed. Factors such as battery life, build quality and overall user experience remain just as important. It is still unclear whether laptops with this Intel chip will be able to match Apple’s efficiency and value for money.

Apple is reportedly already working on a new model of the MacBook Neo, with two notable upgrades.

The first improvement is said to be a faster A19 Pro chip, taken from the latest iPhone models. This would give the MacBook Neo more computing power and better efficiency than the current model with the A18 Pro chip.

In addition, Apple is said to be increasing the memory from 8GB to 12GB. That makes the laptop better suited to multitasking and future use, especially now that more demanding apps and AI features require more memory.

There is no official confirmation yet. The new MacBook is expected next year.
