Prepared for the worst

Re-establishing normal operations after a significant business interruption can present considerable challenges. Businesses generally focus on securing their data and plenty of effective options exist that deliver certainty to businesses as to the safety of their data. However other critical processes, such as production systems, need to be dealt with. Aside from potential loss of earnings stemming from reduced output, acquiring new hardware that may have to be legacy, can be both expensive
and time consuming.Established in 1992, Desktop Systems specialises in developing turnkey production systems for a range of multi-national clients in multiple industry types. Desktop’s product and technical offering is orientated towards the software industry and as well as designing production systems for their clients they also have developed a complete disaster recovery infrastructure in house at their unit in Baldoyle. Although their most frequently accessed support is for USB and DVD/CD duplication and printing, they have a large array of magnetic tape duplication equipment capable of handling multiple tape formats. The production facilities at Desktop Systems are set up for worst case scenarios, such events are the exception. More often they see demand coming from internet outages at client sites or overflow work that their clients acquire outside of their normal production processes. Additionally Desktop provides data verification services where data is transferred from old to new storage mediums to prevent data degradation and when the transfers are complete Desktop have NSA approved hard drive degaussers that will safely and securely destroy old hard disks in a manner that ensures their clients are compliant with data protection legislation.

Innovating new processes and equipment is a key component of Desktop’s portfolio yet clients take considerable solace in the knowledge that Desktop will continue to maintain the fundamental equipment necessary for business continuance in the event of a disaster or even a rainy day.

Tailored approaches essential
“Many organisations are dependent on their IT Infrastructure remaining intact but few invest properly in a structured business continuity plan ” Gillian_vCloud_web

vCloud.ie Gillian Moody

Our research indicates very clearly that many organisations both large and small are very complacent in the area of disaster recovery. IT has now established itself as a critical function within all organisations no matter what sector they operate in. Many organisations are dependent on their IT Infrastructure remaining intact but few invest properly in a structured business continuity (BC) plan. We believe that the unique operational circumstances of the business must be considered when developing a phased and tailored approach to a structured BC plan. In short, the BC plan needs to reflect the operational requirements of the business. We expect a lot of organisations to address this shortfall in the coming two years as the importance of BC becomes recognised at Board level. At vCloud.ie we have developed a suite of products that address some of the issues outlined above, allowing organisations to ‘mould’ a BC strategy to their unique business requirements.

At an absolute minimum we believe that organisations should have the vCloud.ie BC Essential which consists of offsite backup, remote storage and access to remote infrastructure. Every organisation, no matter how small, should place emphasis on having this minimum level of configuration. The costs are not prohibitive but the potential of not having it could be substantial.

Organisations who have an essentially client-facing infrastructure need a BC solution that is enterprise ready. A disruption to the business is simply not an option. The key difference between our packages is a focus on the reduction of the RPO (recovery point objective) and RTO (recovery time objective) from hours to minutes and even seconds.

Building resiliency
“SMEs can no longer ignore business continuity and the growing need for it as part of mainstream business operations” john_caseyTrilogy_web

Trilogy Technologies John Casey

Business continuity has risen in focus over the last number of years and many Irish companies have adapted a culture of continual improvement by regularly evaluating business continuity procedures. However, despite the growing awareness of business continuity, many small and medium enterprises do not appear to be taking action to enhance their business resiliency. Many relate it to emergency response or IT disaster recovery.Increasing pressure from larger organisations to secure the continuity of their supply chains, government legislation and the global acceptance and adoption of business management standards, mean that SMEs can no longer ignore business continuity and the growing need for it as part of mainstream business operations.

At Trilogy we have the experience and expertise to design and implement secure, comprehensive, business continuity and disaster recovery solutions. These solutions help companies maintain uninterrupted business operations in a cost-effective manner, providing fully managed backup and recovery solutions tailored to the individual needs of the company.

Utilising the latest cloud technologies and reporting on the results via edge/point – Trilogy’s online portal – the solution will protect data, applications and the systems that are relied on daily.

Edge/point provides scalable enterprise-class monitoring of networks, servers, applications, storage and cloud in a single pane of glass. The health and performance of an organisation’s ICT infrastructure is proactively monitored and if thresholds are exceeded, alerts are sent via email and/or SMS. We regularly evaluate compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and conformance to business continuity policy and objectives.

Trilogy designs and delivers ICT solutions to meet organisations’ strategic business needs, followed through with leading edge managed services and 24/7 support.
