The Irish Computer Society (ICS) has announced that Universal Honda has become the sponsor of the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge competition, which is open to all secondary schools throughout the country and involves student teams competing against each other to build the best engineered and fastest CO2-powered model racing car.

The winning car, which will be judged on speed, design and the school team’s full project presentations, will be decided at the national finals of the ICS-managed competition in the National Basketball Arena on Tuesday 30 May. The prize for the winning team is a trip to the Universal Honda F1 Team Operation Centre in the UK, as well as milling or IT equipment for their school.

Participating teams are provided with a kit with the balsa wood for making their model. They also receive ongoing support and are paired with a college or university with the equipment necessary for milling the models.

The ICS says that the competition exposes students to 3D modelling, virtual wind tunnels, working in teams, graphic design, project management, fund raising and computer-aided design.

The objective is to encourage interest in the broader science, engineering and technology areas.
