Outsourcer CSC, HP and communications research organisation Fraunhofer FOKUS have joined together to open a cyber-security research centre in Berlin.

As part of a global collaboration, the Cyber-security Demonstration Centre (CDC) is also supported by EMC, RSA, McAfee and Sourcefire. The CDC will be used to demonstrate different attacks on its IT infrastructure, with the aim of developing new cyber-attack defences for the security industry to take up.

"The base for trust, data protection and security are constantly changing. It is important that there are systems that are able to react effectively on danger and that can be integrated flexibly", said professor Radu Popescu-Zeletin, head of Fraunhofer FOKUS.

"What people call security strategy is sometimes not a strategy, but just a collection of security tools," said Hugh Njemanze, CTO and vice president of worldwide research and development at HP enterprise security.

"Having a security strategy means assessing enterprise risk, and then applying tools appropriately to minimise those risks. And it means using fewer tools more effectively."

New systems of security defence will be demonstrated at the CDC from this month.

IT security professionals in Europe have "significant gaps" in their enterprise risk strategies, according to research from HP. HP questioned 500 security professionals at the recent InfoSecurity Europe conference in London, and only 14% were "very confident" that their current IT security solutions are giving them a complete, concise picture of their security and risk state.
