Over half of engineering CEOs believe that a sustainable economic recovery will happen by 2013, according to research carried out by Ipsos MRBI. Just over a quarter believe that this will happen in 2012.
Reducing barriers to business such as high local rates, excessive commercial rents and Ireland’s poor quality of broadband will go a long way to helping create jobs in Ireland, according to John Power, Director General of Engineers Ireland, who was speaking as Engineers Week 2011 drew to a close yesterday.
“Earlier in Engineers Week 2011 we released data that indicated optimism amongst many engineers working in technology, energy and the health sectors. It is clear that this optimism is shared by the senior management across Ireland’s engineering organisations. However, there is still more work to be done by any new Government.
“The job creation projections in the various election manifestos have been pretty spectacular but the figures are just not realistic unless the barriers to commerce are broken down to allow, in particular, small and medium-sized businesses to develop,” said Power.
Earlier this week it was found that 78% of engineers surveyed by Ipsos MRBI believes Ireland is not doing enough to boost innovation and support economic recovery.
