French parliament votes in favour of social media ban for under 15s
The French parliament has voted overwhelmingly to ban social media for under 15s.
At least, if the Senate agrees to the bill. Given the vote breakdown, there seems to be enough support among senators and there is a good chance that this will become law soon.
President Macron of France said: “To ensure that this ban is in place from the start of the next academic year, I have asked the government to activate the fast-track procedure. Because our children’s brains are not for sale. Not to US platforms, nor to Chinese networks.”
If fasttracked through parliament the band could come into effect on 1 September in time for the new school year.
If passed, the ban would make France the second country in the world after Australia to prohibit children’s access to social media by law. Similar discussions are also taking place in Britain and Denmark.
