YouTube has announced the addition of 45 university channels from six countries in Europe and Israel. The new channels will be available through YouTube EDU www.youtube.com/edu, a centralised location where people can quickly and easily discover higher educational institutions on the site.

Universities on YouTube, like Cambridge University and The Open University offer a detailed portrait of academic life via online video.

“YouTube EDU is a global classroom where everyone…can watch and engage with a range of scholastic videos that have been uploaded by some of the world’s great universities,” said Anna De Paula Hanika, product marketing for YouTube in EMEA.”Our education destination and the addition of universities from Europe and Israel are direct responses to our community’s interest in this type of content and we look forward to adding even more institutions over time.”

John Naughton, Professor of the Public Understanding of Technology at the Open University, said, “As we move from a media ecosystem dominated by broadcast television into one dominated by ‘pull’ media like the Web, universities have to be where the action – and the demand – is.”

Building on existing functionality like a directory view that lists all participating university channels alphabetically, YouTube EDU users can filter videos by subject. The service is initially available in English but there are plans to add more languages.
