Internet service provider, Eircom Net has launched a new online anti-virus and anti-spam utility designed to protect home and small business PC users from the worst of the Web. Called Eircom net Email Protector, the service is available to Eircom Net Internet customers for a fee of EUR2 per month.
Managed centrally by the host ISP, the service scans all e-mails before they reach the subscriber’s PC. In addition to spam and virus protection, users can set up personalised ‘black lists’ and ‘white lists’. ‘Black listing’ automatically blocks any e-mail from known spammers and repeat offenders; ‘white listing’ on the other hand allows mail from identified sources, such as friends and family, to be received.
On detection of an e-mail virus, the e-mail is quarantined and the mail, without the virus attached, is then sent to the customer. If spam is detected, the e-mail is blocked or labelled as spam depending on the customer’s chosen settings. If the e-mail is virus free and not identified as spam then it is delivered to the customer as normal.
