The next meeting of European finance ministers due to take place in Dublin on 12-13 April in Dublin Castle will be a first for the community as it will be ditching hardcopy notes entirely in favour of tablet computers, productivity suites and cloud storage.

Organised by the Department of Finance and supported by Dell and Microsoft, meeting delegates will be equipped with encrypted Dell Latitude 10 tablets running Microsoft Windows 8 and Office 365 pre-loaded with relevant documents on arrival in Dublin.

Office 365 and SkyDrive will be used for the distribution of further conference notes over the course of the meeting.

Minister for Finance Michael Noonan said: "In keeping with Ireland’s position as an ‘innovation island’ it is appropriate that the opportunity for my fellow ministers and governors to experience the first paperless EcoFin meeting should take place during Ireland’s presidency of the EU. Many of the world’s leading technology organisations, such as Dell and Microsoft, are based in Ireland and they are key drivers of jobs, growth and innovation in Ireland.

Cathriona Hallahan, managing director, Microsoft Ireland, said: "The EcoFin meeting is one of the most high profile of the entire EU presidency programme and we are delighted that all those attending will have the opportunity to benefit from the latest technology. Microsoft is committed to supporting the government in its ambition to drive jobs and growth and we believe that using high profile opportunities such as the EcoFin to highlight the role that technology from Irish based companies is integral to that agenda."
