Lord Mayor of Dublin Naoise Ó Muirí whas launched a free Wi-Fi service for at key locations around the Capital.
Each of the 12 ‘hotspots’ announced will be marked by wall mosaics featuring 14 ‘digidub’ characters of a Viking, a street cleaner, a tourist, a rockabilly girl and pyjama girl being visible.
"Our future economic success, our ability to attract talent and investment and our competitive branding internationally means we have to use and apply digital technologies now… This project is one of the milestones that will deliver on our Digital Dublin Initiative. By June of this year Dublin will have a Digital Masterplan. The aim of the plan is to develop Dublin as a world centre of digital excellence," said the Lord Mayor.
The network is provided, at no cost to the Council, by Gowex, a Spanish company that has provided similar services in cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Paris and Buenos Aires.
The free service provides a download speed of 512Kb/s and an upload speed of 128Kb/s, which will be upgraded from 512Kb/s to 1Mb/s for the first two months.
The service is available at Smithfield Square, Barnardo’s Square, Clarendon Street, St Patrick’s Park, O’Connell Street Plaza/GPO, Temple Bar Square, Wolfe Tone Square, Frontage to the Convention Centre Dublin, Merrion Park, Henry Street, Grafton Street, and the outdoor amphitheatre at Civic Offices.
Pricing above the basic 512Kb/s package starts at €5 for 24 hours (use within one month) at 3Mb/s; €10 for 1 month 24 hours per day at 3Mb/s; and €8 per month for a flat rate (365 days with no time limit) at 6Mb/s.
