Social media service Bluesky has doubled its user base over the past year to now reach 40 million users.
The app’s creators expect to hit the 50 million user mark by 1 February 2027.
This news was announced alongside the introduction of several new features for the platform.
For instance, Bluesky will be getting a ‘dislike’ button, designed to gather feedback for improving users’ personal feeds.
There will also be a feature for ranking posts based on social proximity, showing posts from like-minded users. Additionally, a ‘bullshit detector’ will be introduced to filter out toxic, spammy, off-topic messages and trolls.
In terms of reach, Bluesky pales in comparison to X (formerly Twitter), which boasts more than 500 million active users. Elon Musk’s freewheeling platform is more like a marketplace where anyone can say whatever they like without shame, restraint or moderation. Bluesky, on the other hand, provides tools to keep conversations more civil, without interfering with content itself.
The number of daily active contributors on Bluesky has halved over the past year and now appears to have stabilised at around 600,000.
