BlackBerry has confirmed that BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) will be released for Android and iPhone this weekend. The firm will also launch a new smartphone next week, the Z30.
The smartphone maker said that its popular instant messaging service, BBM, would launch on Android and iOS this summer. Well it’s finally got a release date – 21 September for Android users and 22 September for those with iPhones and iPads.
Andrew Bocking, executive vice president for BBM at BlackBerry, said: "With more than a billion Android, iOS, and BlackBerry smartphones in the market, and no dominant mobile messaging platform, this is absolutely the right time to bring BBM to Android and iPhone customers."
BlackBerry said the BBM app will be available to download for free from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
The struggling Canadian smartphone maker has also announced a new smartphone called the Z30 (pictured). It didn’t want Apple to get all the limelight this week with the launch of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.
The Z30 is BlackBerry’s biggest smartphone to date with a 5" in AMOLED screen (no word on resolution though). It also features a 1.7GHz processor with quad-core graphics, an antenna to improve connectivity in low signal areas and BlackBerry OS 10.2.
It also has the largest battery to be put in a BlackBerry (2880mAh) which the firm says will provide up to 25 hours of ‘mixed use’.
