A team of transition year students from Colaiste na Toibhirte Bandon, Cork, have been named winner of the 2012 Trend Micro What’s Your Story competition.

The young video-makers’ two-minute video, Hiding Online, showed the dangers of cyber-bullying and how to combat them.

Research from Trend Micro found that a third of children aged 11-15 admitted to taking more risks with their personal safety online than in real life. The purpose of What’s Your Story is to bring into focus the importance of protecting yourself on the Internet.

“Social networking plays such a big part of young people’s lives these days and this is what attracted our transition year class to working on a piece about cyber-bullying. It is simply very relevant and very real to young people everywhere and we really do need to raise more awareness about online safety and responsibility,” said Siobhan Fitzgerald, Transition Year co-ordinator, Colaiste na Toibhirte.

The judging panel for 2012 included Simon Grehan, Webwise and National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE), Marcela Whelan, Cork City Learning Forum, David Girvan, Reassureme.com, and Marianne Lee, Trend Micro EMEA.

All the competition submissions are available to view at www.trendmicro.ie/whatsyourstory.
