These days, OpenAI is putting itself prominently on display to the European advertising industry at the Cannes Lions advertising festival. The message is that the Americans are lined up to roll out its advertising product internationally.
They are keeping the exact timing to themselves. But the company leaves no doubt that it wants to build a substantial advertising business.
Investors are said to have been told that the ambition is to generate a gross advertising revenue of $100 billion by 2030.
However big that sounds, it may not even be all that unrealistic. For comparison: over the first three months of this year Google recorded a turnover of $77 billion. And ChatGPT currently has close to 1 billion users a week, 20% of whom ask a question with a commercial intent. The trick will be to make the gap between search query and suggested answer as small as possible.
OpenAI itself says that it will come up with an advertising product that does not yet exist on the market.
What is clear, however, is who will see advertising when using ChatGPT. Those are the people who use the free version of the chat app and holders of the cheapest subscription.
OpenAI is preparing the launch of new products that strategically distance themselves from ChatGPT as the core product. The chatbot will be further developed into a super app that combines coding tools and AI agents. With a smart chatbot alone, OpenAI is not going to win the proverbial war, because Claude, Gemini and also Grok already offer more than just that.
