The five finalists in the Your Country Your Call competition have been officially announced. The brainchild of Dr. Martin McAleese (husband of president Mary McAleese), Your Country Your Call challenged members of the public to come up with innovative solutions to benefit the economy. Two prizes of €100,000 with a further €500,000 to develop the winning ideas will be awarded.
Praising the five finalists, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Eamon Ryan said: “Our sustainable economic success will be a collective effort from all sections of Irish society. It will require Government, the private sector and the public at large to get behind a new kind of economy…Establishing Ireland as a centre for green energy and traded digital services has been my policy since entering Government.”
The top five ideas are:
• Establishing an IP-based financial securities market in Ireland
• Developing the opportunity for Ireland to become a Global Media Hub
• Creation of a “Superbrand” to market Irish Tourism & Food
• The Data Island Strategy
• Installation of Solar PV Electrical Generators on existing windfarms
