SPIE (Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers), the world-renowned organisation specialising in scientific and engineering applications of light, has elected University of Limerick-based Prof Martin J. Leahy as ‘fellow’ of the organisation.
Prof Leahy (pictured) has been honoured for his innovative contributions in developing commercial biophotonics and imaging devices from idea to industry. Through his research, he has developed a range of pioneering applications such as a laser Doppler blood perfusion monitor, a laser driver and temperature controller, a tissue viability imager, and a fluidised bed gasifier.
Prof Leahy is the founding director of the Charles Parsons Initiative at the University of Limerick, a Science Foundation Ireland-funded initiative which focuses on energy and environmental sustainability research. He is also the first scientific director of the National Biophotonics and Imaging Platform Ireland, a fellow of the Royal Academy of Medicine Ireland, a national committee member of the Institute of Physics Ireland, and Biophotonics Section co-chair of Photonics Ireland. Prof Leahy has been elected Fellow along with a further 66 SPIE members worldwide.
Commenting on Professor Leahy’s election, John Travers, director-general of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), said: “I welcome the news of Professor Leahy’s thoroughly-deserved election to this prestigious international group. Prof Leahy has consistently produced exceptional work and has been a vital contributor to the development and promotion of photonics in Ireland and beyond. This accolade is also a significant boost for Prof Leahy’s team of researchers at University of Limerick, and helps to position Ireland as a leader in the development of photonics.”
