Carphone Warehouse is investing €6 million in a new data centre to power its mobile virtual network operator service, launching in July 2015.
The data centre, located in Citywest, Dublin, opens in January, will be supported by technology from globally renowned telecoms manufacturers, Huawei and Mvneco.
The new mobile operator represents a total €30 million investment here and will lead to the creation of up to 50 full-time jobs.
Carphone Warehouse’s mobile operator, which will have its own distinct brand and dedicated network capacity, is targeting up to 6% of the market within the first five years.
Peter Scott, managing director of Carphone Warehouse Ireland (pictured), said: “Our plan is to offer a highly innovative, next-generation service that is currently not available in today’s mobile market. To fully realise this, and to support the massive amounts of data generated by consumer mobile use, we require dependable, futureproof technology.
“The new data centre will not only deliver reliability, but give Carphone Warehouse the necessary infrastructure to support an innovative offering with a real competitive edge.”
Carphone Warehouse is Ireland’s largest independent communications retailer, employing over 700 people across 91 stores. The mobile operator will use Three’s network.
