Asus has branched into bamboo with its latest laptop range. As its name implies, the new notebook is encased entirely in bamboo which means that, in addition to being eye-catching, the wooden case can be fully recycled.

The manufacturer points out further individuality can be achieved through varying treatments of the wood, each resulting in different colours, or through distinctive designs, or a monogram, etched into the bamboo by laser.

The Bamboo series uses Asus Super Hybrid Engine technology, which gives users full control over their performance levels; it allows a battery life extension of between 35% and 70% in comparison to conventional notebooks, and also allows up to 23% increase in system performance, Asus claims.

The hybrid engine technology works by monitoring the power requirements of components and automatically adjusting power levels in real time to match these demands. Users can choose from several preset options to suit individual needs.

According to Asus, the accumulative power savings from improved efficiency result in an annual reduction of 12.3kg in CO2 emissions per notebook. Spread across the manufacturer’s total annual production of 6 million notebooks, this CO2 cut equates to saving 36 million trees every year, says Asus.

Bamboo, still widely used in Asia for scaffolding on multi-storey constructions, rivals the tensile strength of many metals.

The Bamboo Series notebook comes in two versions: a 12.1″ model weighing 1.57kg and an 11.1″ model 1.25kg. Both are powered by Intel Core2 Duo processors and DDRII RAM. Suggested retail price is EUR*1,699. Available in Ireland now.
