IT distributor Westcoast has launched an augmented reality (AR) app for iOS to demonstrate how resellers can deploy Apple technology across their customers’ infrastructures.
Already common on mobile operating systems and handheld consoles, AR applications use a device’s camera to take pictures of an object or location and overlap additional content on to the image. For example, a picture of Grafton Street taken with AR could include directions to specific shops or notifications of special offers. Sony’s Playstation Vita uses AR to create 3D games from real time video of special cards.
Westcoast’s Apple in Business campaign includes a series of 10 weekly podcasts, to inform resellers about Apple’s product range within various markets. Topics covered include introduction to iPad; working with Microsoft Exchange; using CardMunch; and device location.
Alan Hunt, director at Westcoast, said: “Our exponential sales growth on Apple is due to our excellent reseller community and knowledge of Apple products. Our marketing efforts have always been aimed at providing these businesses with incisive and usable tools such as the Apple Gym. Augmented reality is a great way for us to interact further with our resellers and really show them what Westcoast has to offer… In the future, the app will also host augmented reality campaigns across our business on a wider range of products and solutions.”
