Vodafone has installed a backup system for its enterprise data based around StorageTek’s giant L5500 Power Horn tape silo which can scale to a maximum of 16.8Pbyte capacity and 132,000 slots.

The continued growth of data within Vodafone’s business prompted a tender process to identify a consolidated and scalable data protection system for the mobile operator’s storage enterprise. The selected system includes StorageTek’s flagship tape silo, the L5500 with the latest and fastest Fibre Channel LTO2 Ultrium drive technology. The system will be able to scale up in line with Vodafone’s data growth and enables a centralised backup strategy that integrates with Vodafone’s existing infrastructure.

The StorageTek system will be fully deployed across the storage enterprise therefore providing a utility-based cost model that will provide savings on management, operational and environmental costs.

‘The value of the StorageTek solution for us is that it is an intrinsic part of our Enterprise Backup Strategy which can now expand and evolve in line with the evolving needs of our business,’ said Shane Larkin, IT infrastructure manager with Vodafone.

Sean Jackman, managing director of StorageTek Ireland said: ‘We are delighted to have secured this contract from Vodafone Ireland and we look forward to working with them to manage their diverse storage requirements. The solution provided is ideal for consolidating Vodafone’s Open Systems backup and restoring and eliminating the management burdens that come with maintaining multiple smaller storage systems.’
